Top Reasons for Moving
[00:00:00] Real estate fans, Alice Lema here, broker, John L. Scott in Southern Oregon with another podcast. Today we're going to talk about the most common reasons people move and I'm bringing it up right now because we have had some shifts and why people move. And Redfin, which is a really big real estate company, commissioned a survey conducted by Qualtrics and it did a sample in May and June 2023.
So that's pretty current as far as real estate numbers go. And I want to show you, there's a lot of new and different things on the list, but I do want to focus mostly on the want more space because we've got 33. 8 percent of the respondents wanting more space. And that is what we're seeing in in the field that a lot of people want more space.
They don't necessarily have more people. Some of them do, but a lot of them just want offices and they want separate offices. And this is left over from the pandemic. Why am I making a big deal about this? [00:01:00] Because if you're selling your house, you want to set up a staged area for an office. If you don't have one, make one look like it.
If you, if you don't have a room you can dedicate to staging for an office, find a little corner somewhere and put a little desk, maybe put a little light screen or one of those little wall dividers, create a space so that the buyers can see, cause they got that in their head now. So I want sellers to really walk around their house and look for that.
There are also, we still have some strong demand for moving to be with family. That's pretty common, especially in Southern Oregon. We are still one of the lifestyle destinations for active retired people. We just also now have some of the youngers who have discovered Southern Oregon because we're a lifestyle destination.
So there are some surprises on this survey. We've got. Kind of at the bottom of the [00:02:00] chart people weren't comfortable in their previous neighborhood. They might've had issues not only with the crime situation, but also they might not have felt comfortable. I know a lot of people move to Southern Oregon just because they want the elbow room and a lot of us in Southern Oregon are like that.
We really love having our open space. And if you live in a big city. This is one of the places a lot of us end up because we wanted some more room having to go back to work here down at the bottom. We've got some surprising surprising answers to the survey have to move back due to return to work policy.
So some small number of people are having to go back to their big city job or their urban. Area where they actually have to report to an office now, or the kind of job they are taking taking on in their life [00:03:00] requires that they actually physically be at that location. I think that used to be a higher priority than it is now and that's why I wanted to talk about this today, because as our society changes and as our housing needs change, then I think buyers and sellers.
Thank It helps them to have the data so that they can make good decisions for them. And there are buyers out there that are a little hesitant to ask for that extra bedroom or ask for that extra cottage in the back. They're not sure they can afford it, but, but their, their lifestyle really should include that.
So I just want to give some. Some support to people who are out looking for homes. If you need the space, you need the space and, and really stick to your guns. If it's going to make your life better every single day, then make sure your house provides that. And if you're selling, look over this list.
Some of it you might agree with, some of it you might not, [00:04:00] but it is the results of a survey done professionally. And and it's very interesting. It's very, very interesting.
